Department of Defense (DoD) Cyber Awareness Practice Exam

A firewall's primary role in cybersecurity is to control network traffic. It acts as a barrier between an internal network and external sources, monitoring and regulating incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined security rules. This monitoring helps to prevent unauthorized access to the network and protects against various online threats, such as malware and hackers attempting to exploit vulnerabilities.

By establishing rules that determine which traffic should be allowed or blocked, a firewall ensures that only legitimate communications pass through, thereby maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of the internal network. Firewalls can be hardware-based, software-based, or a combination of both, and are essential components of any effective cybersecurity strategy.

Other options, such as storing encrypted files, improving network speed, and assisting in software updates, do not accurately reflect the core function of a firewall. While these tasks may be relevant in broader cybersecurity practices, the specific responsibility of a firewall lies in controlling network traffic to safeguard sensitive data and maintain a secure network environment.
